GLOBAL WORKSHOP SUMMARY
REPORT
MOUNT KENYA-NAIROBI,
KENYA
The fourth global workshop of the GEF/UNDP
Small Grants Programme was convened in Nairobi,
Kenya for the period May23-30, 2003. SGP National
Coordinators, members from National Steering
Committees, Programme and Administrative Assistants
from 62 country programmes (SGP has 65 participating
countries) assembled for two days of project
site visits followed by five days of meetings
on key aspects of programme implementation
in the third operational phase. The SGP CPMT
joined them and UNOPS headquarters staff,
UNF SGP COMPACT and SGP PTF Local Coordinators,
and persons from the UNDP/GEF, UNEP, GEF Secretariat,
GEF STAP.
The SGP has 65 participating countries
covered by 53 country programmes, and divided
among five regions:
Africa: Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cote
d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania,
Mauritius, Namibia, Niger, Senegal, South
Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe.
Arab States: Egypt, Jordan, Morocco,
Palestinian Authority, Tunisia, Lebanon.
Asia/Pacific: Bhutan, India, Indonesia,
Iran, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New
Guinea, Mongoloia, Philippines, Sri Lanka,
Thailand, Vietnam.
Europe: Albania, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,
Lithuania, Poland, Turkey.
Latin America and Caribbean: Barbados
(covers 10 island countries), Belize, Bolivia,
Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic,
Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras,
Mexico, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago (covers
Surinam). NCs from Palestinian Authority,
Lebanon and Ghana were not represented.
The workshop was opened by Assistance of
Minister of the Environment of Kenya, Frank
Pinto, Executive Coordinator of the UNDP/GEF,
UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident
Representative in Kenya, and Ahmed Djoghlaf
(GEF UNEP).
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
The workshop was designed to accomplish
the next major objectives:
· Address priority issues of interest to
all country programmes and learn from one
another.
· Incorporation of new GEF Operational Programmes
(OP "Land Degradation" and OP
"Persistent Organic Pollutants".
· Results or the SGP Third Independent Evaluation
· Possible cooperation of SGP with new UNDP
and UNEP initiatives:
-Community Water Initiative (CWI)
-Poverty and Environment Initiative (PEI)
-UNEP Drylands Centre`s role and potential
linkages with SGP
· Consider 3-year strategic directions:
identifying action points
The workshop agenda covered substantive,
operational, and financial issues through
presentations by resource persons and National
Coordinators (NCs), and discussion and exchange
in working groups and plenary sessions.
In addition, there were training sessions
for new NCs on financial and administrative
issues, and for all NCs on the SGP database.
NCs also had the opportunity to consult
with UNOPS on personnel issues. .
